The APS runs here and scope matters
The Australian Public Service, defence and the professional services ecosystem that supports both drive Canberra's economy. Federal security requirements can extend into supplier work, but the boundary depends on the entity, information, contract and system.
The Protective Security Policy Framework is mandatory for non-corporate Commonwealth entities. Other organisations can be required by a contract, deed or information sharing arrangement to apply particular PSPF requirements. Under the PSPF, Essential Eight Maturity Level Two is the baseline for non-corporate Commonwealth entities. It is not automatically mandatory for every private contractor. IRAP assessors evaluate systems against Australian Government security guidance. They do not certify, endorse or accredit a system. We identify the boundary with the client and its security or legal advisers before selecting controls. We do not provide legal advice, IRAP assessment or government accreditation.
Why Canberra
Federal work needs a precise security boundary
Barton, Russell, Brindabella Business Park and the parliamentary triangle host agencies, integrators and professional services firms. A small internal workflow may have a very different assurance requirement from a system processing security classified information. Treating both as the same government compliance problem creates either unnecessary work or a dangerous gap.
The PSPF explains who must apply the framework and how requirements can extend through agreements. The Essential Eight maturity model guidance explains the mandatory baseline for non-corporate Commonwealth entities and notes that contracts may set obligations for others. IRAP provides independent security assessment, not automatic compliance or accreditation. Our work starts by recording which requirements the client has confirmed and which remain for its authorised advisers or assessor.
