In detail

Prompt engineering covers the techniques used to get useful output from a language model, including clear instructions, examples (few shot), structured output formats, role assignment, chain of thought prompting and tool use directives. Good prompts can move a model from unreliable to production grade on the same task without changing the underlying model. The discipline includes testing prompts against varied inputs, capturing edge cases and treating prompts as code that should be versioned and reviewed.
