ACNCAustralian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission

The national regulator of charities in Australia, responsible for registration, transparency and governance.

In detail

The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) registers charities, maintains the public charity register, and enforces the ACNC Governance Standards. Registered charities access tax concessions including DGR status (where eligible) and reporting obligations through the Annual Information Statement. Charities handling personal information are also subject to the Privacy Act.

Why it matters for Australian business

Australian not-for-profits adopting AI need to balance ACNC governance expectations (board responsibility, conflict-of-interest management, prudent operations) with the practical pressure to do more with less staff. AI tools for grant writing, donor management and volunteer coordination are some of the highest-leverage uses we see in this sector.
