A Fractional Chief AI Officer (CAIO) is an experienced AI strategist and leader who works with an organisation on a part time, retainer or project basis to fill the executive AI function. Responsibilities typically include developing the AI strategy, building the AI governance framework, assessing and selecting AI tools, upskilling the leadership team, managing AI vendors and reporting to the board on AI risk and opportunity. The fractional model is common in Australian SMBs where the scale does not justify a full time executive but the complexity of AI decisions exceeds what a general manager or CTO can carry on top of their existing role.
