Cursor

An AI-first code editor that combines autocomplete, chat and multi-file refactoring with several foundation models.

In detail

Cursor is a fork of VS Code rebuilt around AI. It has tab-complete autocomplete, an in-editor chat with the codebase as context, and a Composer/Background Agent mode that can make changes across many files at once. Cursor lets users choose between Claude, GPT and other models depending on the task and supports MCP integrations. It is the most popular AI-first editor with developers and is the daily-use tool for many production engineering teams.

Why it matters for Australian business

Cursor is what most engineers building Australian SMB applications are using day to day. We use it daily. The risk for businesses commissioning work is the same as any AI-assisted development: speed creates its own problems. When suggestions are accepted quickly, architecture drifts, security patterns get skipped and dependencies conflict. The difference between a Cursor project that works and one that is maintainable is the human reviewing the output.
